Restore

  • What is a domain restore? Why does it cost so much in comparison to a domain renewal?

A domain should be renewed before its expiration date. If the domain expires, you can still renew it after the expiration date for a certain grace period (typically 30 days). If you do not renew the domain within the grace period and the domain is not purchased during the expired auction period, then the domain is deleted. Dynadot would no longer control the domain name and it can no longer be renewed. After a certain redemption period (typically 30 days), the domain is released back to the public and anyone can register it.If you decide you still want the domain within the redemption period, you need to restore it. This is a time-consuming process that is not automated. We actually have to submit paperwork to complete the restore. Most of the price you pay goes to the central registry, not us. All restores include a 1-year renewal.A domain restore should not be confused with a backordering service. A domain restore is for domains that have been registered by Dynadot, but were deleted after the renewal grace period since the owner did not renew the domain. This is only for our customers who wish to restore a domain they had registered with us, but forgot to renew the domain after it expired.See our TLD List to find out the renewal grace period of each domain extension.Learn more about the domain lifecycle

  • How do I restore my domain in redemption period?

If the grace renewal period of your domain has already passed, you may still be able to restore the domain. Unfortunately, this is not guaranteed and will cost more because the domain has already been deleted. To restore your domain, please follow these steps: Sign in to your Dynadot account. Select "My Domains" from the left-side menu bar and click on "Inactive Domains" from the drop-down. Check the box next to the domain name(s) you wish to restore. If the domain name(s) do not have a checkbox next to them, they cannot be restored. Click on the "Restore" button. The domain(s) will be added to your shopping cart at the top right-side of the page. Click on your shopping cart to access the item(s) in your cart. Press the "Check Out" buttons to submit your restore order. NOTE: A restore order can take up to 24 hours to process. In most cases, a restore can be done within 30 days (the typical redemption period of most domain extensions) after the renewal grace period (typically 30 days) has ended. However, sometimes a domain has received a bid in our expired auctions and as a result, it cannot be restored.Find out more about the domain lifecycle.
